Special Devices
At OrthoPets we pride ourselves that we can think outside the box when there is a requirement for an innovative support solution to a problem. Therefore, whilst we have a portfolio of standard device options which cater for a vast range of common conditions, we can also fabricate devices to cater for 'special requirements'.
A couple of examples are shown:-
First is the 'clam shell' design of the non-articulating carpus orthosis. This was produced for a dog who suffered major complications after a pan-carpal arthrodesis following multiple stress fractures of the distal row of carpal bones. The end result was a loss of metacarpal & digit 2, loss of digit 1, partial proximal loss (75%) of metacarpal 3, so whilst the digits & pads were still present, it did not function as there was no connection to the carpus, loss of accessory carpal bone pad. Apart from providing support for the entire limb distal to the elbow, the device needed to provide protection to the cranial aspect of the limb and spread the load of any straps to avoid further damage to the compromised bone structures.
The second case again uses the 'clam shell' design, but with extended tread covering to protect the medial & dorsal aspects of the paw, whilst also having been adapted to attach to a Beko harness to assist with the recovery phase of the stride. The dog in this case is a Great Dane with paraparesis to his right pelvic limb as a result of a fibro cartilaginous embolism. He has proprioceptive deficits and diminished flexion reflex.
